The Province of British Columbia introduced the “carbon-tax” in the month of July. Proponents of the tax argue that this will make the consumption of carbon based fuel more expensive and thereby force consumers to seek “environmentally friendly” alternatives. According to the CBC, gas prices will increase by 2.4 cents a litre, while heat fuel will increase by 2.8 cents a litre. By 2012, the carbon tax will cost 7.24 cents per litre at the pump. The CBC also reported that “to soften the impact of the carbon tax, the government gave a $100 climate action dividend to each British Columbian”.
Although some environmental groups support such legislation, others find it problematic. Some critics claim that the tax will favour the rich while punishing the poor. Others see it simply as a way for the government to increase taxes under the guise of environmental concerns.
The discussion regarding carbon-tax is part of a larger debate within Capitalist societies on how to manage the devastation that their way of life is bringing to the environment. However, what is missing in the debate is an assessment of how the Capitalist mindset itself is largely responsible for these problems.
The Capitalists believe that happiness is achieved by maximizing pleasure through the acquisition and consumption of material goods. As a result of this idea, they believe that the economy should be focused on the maximization of production to satisfy the desires of man.
In order to feed the cycle of production and consumption, the environment must be stripped of its resources at an unsustainable rate. In addition, companies must maximize profits by cutting corners when it comes to maintaining environmental standards. They will engage in activities that are profitable, but wasteful. For example, General Motors, Firestone Tire, Standard Oil of California and Phillips Petroleum bought and dismantled street-car systems in 45 cities in the US – in the hopes that consumers would buy cars, gas, and tires. Although these companies made large profits by selling more goods, the reality is that such a move was detrimental to the environment as it poured into the streets thousands of cars that not only spewed pollution, but also required the unnecessary extraction of rubber, iron, etc. to build these cars, tires, etc.
The environmental devastation caused by the Capitalists should not be a surprise to Muslims, as Allah (swt) warned us that applying a ruling system other than Allah’s (swt) will cause the spread of corruption on earth:
“Corruption has appeared in the land and the sea on account of what the hands of men have wrought, that He may make them taste a part of that which they have done, so that they may return.” [Surah Ar Rum (30): Ayah 41]
[The Islamic Scholar] Al-Jalalayn’s (ra) tafsir (explanation) of this verse states: “Corruption has appeared on land, in the wastelands, because of the rain being withheld and the vegetation diminishing, and on sea, in lands near rivers because of their waters diminishing, because of what people’s hands have perpetrated, of acts of disobedience”.
